This place is sweet My best friend used to own a gelato store and I can honestly say this is some of the best gelato I've ever had. I've tried 6 different flavors and they're all amazing. I have also eaten here twice, once for dinner and once for lunch. Last time at lunch we got two paninis which come with fries for only $10 each. Very good, the food gets a 4 but the gelato is what takes this place to a 5. I have never had their breakfast but i am sure it is good based on their other food. They also have $6 mimosas. The atmosphere is also very pleasant with all outdoor seating and shaded table options.

So I am conflicted... ordered a great sandwich was enough for two meals, but boy did I have indigestion both times, but I still wanted more! Also don't look into the kitchen, you may barf, it looks like 25 years of grease and dirt on the walls. But maybe that's where the flavors come from? And the staff is young kids that don't appear to be too concerned with sanitary food prep practice. The truffle fries are perfect.

Very good food. Surprisingly good salads. I wouldn't expect a place like this to have great salads. Updated: Slow service. They prioritize take out over dine in.

Gelato-wise....It's pretty good. They even have Italian ice sorbet for those who want dessert without all the dairy. There is free Wi-Fi here and there seems to be a good amount of food options but none of them are vegetarian-friendly. I'm not the biggest fan of the space though. I prefer Cherry Smash in Coral Springs because their space has lots of vintage memorabilia to talk about. This place has outside seating but we retreated inside to escape the swarming flies (expected bees to prefer ice cream more than flies). The customer service was good. We paid at the register before seating ourselves. Our server was insistent on having us try out flavors lol. I had the key lime gelato and enjoyed it.

Authentic Italian gelato! There is quite no other taste that compares, rich creamy and full of flavor. I love coming here on weekends with friends and family the ambiance at night is cozy and a bit romantic. This is definitely my favorite place to grab some yummy gelato.

Totally loveeeeeeee! Omg I lived in Boca and never knew about this until now! From the outside I always assumed it was just gelato and ice cream or whatever, never thought to stop and find out that its actually everything you've ever wanted in a restaurant. So we started with the artichoke dip and truffle fries, so yummy, dip was creamy and not stingy on the veggies, the truffle fries were tossed in parmesan cheese, hot and so addictive! I had the cutest little caramel macchiato accompanying my grub, also hot, sweet, strong and delicious. Next I ordered the Cali Chicken naan. It was awesome, grilled chicken, bacon, veggies and avocado drizzeled with ranch, on top of steamy naan bread - this was a lunchtime winner in my eyes. Well it didn't stop there, with the many sweet delights we couldn't resist splitting a gelato, so we began the deliberations. One of the girls that worked there assisted us and was super helpful letting us sample the many flavors to help us in the decision process. We finally got the banana chocolate crunch I think its called. Creamy, silky, banana-y, just scrumpcious. I was eyeing the last piece of passionfruit cheesecake but quickly regained some self control and asked for the bill instead. Thank you Sonny's for being such a little gem, can't wait to come back one evening and sit in the outdoor area under the fairy lights sipping some delectable sweet coffee treats!

I had to come and update my review and drop them from 5 to 4 stars. I have been back several times and unfortunately the service here is just consistently terrible. I love this place and the food and gelato is consistent and delicious and I will keep coming back and bringing friends. But, the service is just not there. You go inside and let them know you are grabbing a table and you wait 5-10 minutes to be acknowledged with water or anything each and every visit. They are slow with everything always. Sometimes you even have to wait 5 minutes at the register just to pay and leave. So as much as this place is great, the service just can't put them at 5 stars. They need to hire an extra person and I think it would solve these issues.

What a local gem! "Only locals eat here" sigh was at the door and it sure was. 5 elderly men came in to have lunch with red wine. What a great atmosphere in boca! This restaurant used to be an old boca raton commerce building converted into a gelato and food restaurant. We ordered the cheese steak (without cheese), salami flat bread and the truffle fries. My 9 month old was fancy enough to try the truffle fries and she loved it. The Salami flatbread was refreshing. The sauce tasted home made and the dough was soft. The cheese steak was tender and tasted great! Of course the gelato was ordered and they hooked ya up with double scoops! You can go through drive thru and order a gelato to go! The gelato was not sweet and tasted awesome!

Cute cozy cafe in Boca Raton best for gelato lovers. They have a gazillion gelato flavors. Well more than 40 flavors. They have comfy outdoor seating which allows you to enjoy your delicious treat. They do get busy in the evenings so plan your trip there. You order your food in the counter area and find a seat in one of the tables. It's a casual place however seems like a local favorite with the chill atmosphere. I have only had their gelato before with a couple of friends however they serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. The portion size was good and quality was superb. If you never experienced gelato tasting I recommend this place. Gelato is a soft Italian ice-cream which is nice, light and creamy. This place makes you feel like a local of Boca yet reminisce the essence of a Italian cafe. It's conveniently located in Boca on Federal Hwy. Go try it out.

What a great little cafe. I want to give five stars, but cannot for not having tried any of the food, though I will give four on the strength of their gelato alone. First off, let's go ahead and tell you that this place is nothing new. The locals and gelato aficionados have known about this place for decades. We decided to stop by for a nice after dinner dessert and had heard the gelato was good, but good is an understatement to what is clearly some of the best gelato to be found not only in just Boca Raton, but all of SoFla for that matter. They must have had close to 30 flavors to choose from. We tried the Ricotta Cannoli, Egg Nog, S'mores, Cookie Dough, Maple Walnut, and Cassata Siciliana. Every single one of these flavors were on point and left us knowing that we would need to come back to try more. The ambiance is very nice and cozy with a comfy little patio area out front, and a few tables inside as well. This place also receives high marks as they have some of the more friendly staff to be found in the area. If you are looking for a charming date spot, or a nice after dinner dessert spot (they do have more than just gelato, by the way), or are just a real fan of gelato, Sonny's is a must go.

I'm a FAN... 3 stars may not say so, but I REALLY am.... BUT... there is a "BUT" in there... For all the things I love about Sonny's I was really put off last night when we jumped in for a cappuccino to go... * * * TACKY OBSERVATION NUMBER ONE * * * Not everyone serves their coffee in cups with their logo or name on them and thats okay with me (leave that for the Dunkin Donuts and Starbucks of the world), but when we got home we noticed the "hot cup sleeve" was from Old Navy... an Old Navy advertisement (Sonny's Gelato Cafe not anywhere to be seen). Sonny's has been around along time... coffee bar, gelato, italian ices, bakery goods and an array of hot dishes... generally a classy place with easy going appeal... and they have a very loyal following (young and old)... plus a great outdoor patio with plenty of seating to enjoy whichever treat you choose. * * * TACKY OBSERVATION NUMBER TWO * * * But then I noticed something else about that advertising "hot cup sleeve"... it was an advertisement for Old Navy's Thanksgiving sale (Black Friday) AND STILL NO MENTION OF SONNY'S... not much of a cross promotional campaign; it really suggests Old Navy gave them away since the sleeves were "useless" Old Stock (since the dates are two months past). Like I said, it's not all bad... but I think using Old Navy "hot cup sleeves" lowers my perception of Sonny's..... SORRY to say... BUT that's some TACKY CRAP

OMG-- I have had to slow down on how often I come here-- it was getting out of control! LOVE the mint gelato, it tastes so fresh (not like the sweet processed mint you are used from the freezer section of Publix). Also try the coffee drinks (or the coffee with gelato drinks!) -yummmm. One day I will try the food here. It always smells so good, but I am always too focused on getting my gelato fix.

Sonny gelato is another very cool place to sip cafe and taste gelato outside especially during traditional winter months while all our friends are freezing their tushes off...it is a relaxing no rush outta here type of place...so be patient on the line ordering cause you'll want to stick around and relax as if you're sitting in your own backyard...also my fav time is late after 9 til?....enjoy and if you don't enjoy then it means you need help relaxing and a cafe and gelato just isn't enough to do it.. In that case you should go right to cruise ports or airport or nearest bus head right outta town and go relax and then come back here to relax...wanna meet here?

Loved this place! Employees were super nice and so open and helpful! Gave great suggestions! Had a panini with was s delicious and full of flavor! So fresh! And don't even get me started on dessert! Best gelato I've ever had!!! So much flavor, took home a cupcake and was more than delighted! Great little place, with outdoor seating and indoor too! So chill and relaxing can't wait to go back!

Great food at reasonable prices. Staff and owner are friendly and welcoming. Come here often for gelato or the Bloody Mary plus breakfast bowl. Can't go wrong. A nice gem that the locals know about. For dinner the selections are mainly Italian and tasty.

Delicious gelato. Not much else to say about it, plenty of flavors from the standard to the adventurous, indoor and outdoor seating, just a cool spot to cool off from the heat.

Sonny's is one of those places you're glad you found. They serve homemade Gelato - many flavors. You can sample till you find one you like. They're serving food now too, but I haven't tried that. I only come for the Gelato. Parking is always easy, even at night.

Worth stopping by but get ready to stand a little in line. I came Sunday evening when they had already run out of a few flavors unfortunately. Both flavors I tried, tiramisu and maple walnut were great. Tiramisu was more on the sweeter side and maple walnut was much simpler in flavor which I actually preferred. $5 mimosas are a nice addition as well as a nice, casual patio outside to enjoy your delicacies.

I have always been a great fan of sonnys. I love the food, the atmosphere , and the prices. It seems that the service has home down hill. I've gone to the drive thru twice in the past couple weeks. Honk the horn a few times and NO SERVICE! Very disappointing. When I sat down outside for dining I get waited on but there is never a follow thru. I've had to hunt down the waiter and several times I took my check inside to pay! Very disappointing I really like this place.

Absolutely love this place. Have eaten here numerous times. Excellent vegetarian options. Have ordered something different each time & the flavors in every dish are unique & outta this world (marinades/sauces). Love ending meal with homemade gelato. Every time I go am waited on by a high school/college student & have never had a problem, they have always been nice & courteous. I prefer supporting the little man, so this has become a regular spot

Great, authentic gelato!! Like you find in Italy. It's a small place, although they have outdoor seating, which is nice. Could use better quality furniture out there! Anyway, the food is good, but desserts are better... They have live music in the evenings now. I love that you can drive thru for gelato!!

Finally got to experience Sonny's gelato, it was good, not great. The question is, would I return? Sorry to say, know I would not. We have eaten many Gelato's from NY to Sorento, Sonny's doesn't even come close.

Updated review - after posting a negative review previously, I had to give them a chance again. I know it's not easy to be in a local business/small business. We went in there because we had a friend in town. The staff was really sweat, gelato awesome. We'll be back whenever in East Boca....yummy cappuccino too!!!

Awesome find! Coming home after eating at a restauarant on Federal, we wanted coffee/dessert and as we were driving this place caught our eye and an instant we turned hard right into the parking lot....quickly pulled out the phone and went to trust yelp.....yup...we're going in! Awesome gelato, super nice people, and a great atmosphere sitting outside on the patio. Highly recommend!

Been here many times but my last visit was with the new ownership. I always worry when a place that has such a great following is sold. Based on my experience, the worry was unfounded. Place was clean, service was great, and food was good. Lots of choices and everything was prepared fresh. Kudos to the new owners for maintaining an already great place.

Walked over here after dinner at Senor Burrito. Cute little place and friendly service. I'm not a gelato aficionado so perhaps I'm the wrong person to judge, but I thought the gelato was just okay. Small is $3.75 and medium is $4.25. Companion thought her gelato tasted a little chemically. Takes Discover.

  • Veronica R.

My 2 stars is only towards the Gelato. The restaurant itself is really cute and was impressed they even have a drive-thru. We did not try the food, but it looked really good from what I saw. Now for the gelato, I love gelato and choose it over ice-cream any day. I was really disappointed to say the least. It tasted weird, I can't really describe it. It wasn't creamy, it almost had an Italian ice consistency. My boyfriend and I ended up throwing it away....that is really rare for us when it comes to any kind of sweets. It left a nasty after taste as well.

I have been coming here for years and have always appreciated the variety of flavones and excellent taste of the gelato. As a fitness enthusiast, I often make this my weekly dessert cheat, and it's always worth it. Nice place to sit outside with friends and chat.

First time gelato taster and I am very happy! Think I may have found a new love :) The gelato @ Sonny's was not only fresh and light but there was a plethora of flavors and variety. Ended up going with the cookie dough flavor which was served with sprinkles on top-- doesn't get any better than that! In addition to feeding into my sugar needs, I had a delicious eggplant parmigiana for lunch! For $6.95 it was big enough to split into a meal later in the day and was delicious even the second time around. Cute little patio to enjoy your italian dish and gelato outside on a nice day. Right off of Federal and 20th makes it a great location as well!

Great service, great food, and really really delicious gelato. The kitchen closes early at 930am but gelato and espresso/coffee and other desserts are served til 1130pm. It's mainly out door seating and lit with low lights ..great scene for date, or to just hang out with friends and family. Dress how you want and relax in the easy going environment. No rush to flip tables you can sit and talk til closing. The price right and the portions are generous. You will have a great experience 100%

My first and only experience with Sonny's was for a Saturday lunch outing. When you walk in you are greeted with a pleasant outside seating atmosphere. The outside resembles a quaint garden with concrete tables and seating perfect for catching some South Florida sunlight on a good day. The front cashier/server was friendly and informative, all smiles. I ordered "The Gladiator" panini which consists of roast beef, provolone cheese, and caramelized onions. The sandwich and bread were fresh and delicious and especially important was the fact that all of the ingredients were of the same temperature. The onions weren't piping hot which would have offset the taste of the cold roast beef. Everything came around to room temperature. I highly respect the man who made that sandwich, because most shit franchised eateries don't honor such details. I can only give my four stars to the lunch I had there on a Saturday afternoon, but I was impressed. With serious varieties of gelato and an impressive selection of entrees, I will be visiting again!

Been coming to Sonny's for years as my favorite after dinner spot. It's a great little italian place for cappuccino and other italian goodies as well. Sonny's is a cute little cafe with an outside seating area with plenty of seating to handle large groups. My personal order is almost always a cappuccino and a couple of different types of biscotti's. Sometimes I even treat myself to some extra calories and go for a cup of gelato. They have about 30 different flavors. You can sample them before buying but I would recommend the Nutello gelato. They also offer italian ices, bakery items like cookies, cheesecake and other sweets. Most importantly, I'm not a big fan of cannoli's but my son is, so I almost always return home with one for him. Sonny's serves their cannoli's the traditional way that it is done in all the NYC bakeries; the shell is not filled with the sweet filling until it is ordered. Next time you finish up dinner at Mizner Park or nearby Mississippi Sweets BBQ, do yourself a favor and treat yourself to a coffee cafe experience.

This is a small shop with a lot of charm and some great gelato. They have three cup sizes, two waffle come options and you can get two different flavors together. Lots of "classic" flavors and some unique ones as well; I had Nutella and coconut, and was quite pleased.

I ordered a bacon cheeseburger and a cup of Italian Wedding soup. My wife had the prime rib sandwich. I asked for the burger "a little pink" and the server said "medium?" so I said okay. When I got it it was not pink at all. Aside from the doneness it had a good taste including the warm croissant roll. The service had been slow the whole time so by the time the server came back to inquire "how's everything" it was too late to send the burger back. She was barely apologetic about my "medium" burger. We got a pint of hazelnut gelato to-go and I thought the flavor was authentic and rich. My wife took the other half of her sandwich home and I ate it the next night. I heated it in the toaster oven to re-melt the cheese and it was very good. I would go back.

Sonny's has a great selection of gelato and italian ices, although I'd like to see a few more fruit gelato offerings and a few less cream but overall they do a great job. They also serve a small Italian menu, have a surprisingly good array of Euro and craft beer, and some wicked coffee. The place may look like a fast-food hermit crab, but it belies a pretty decent restaurant. My only wish would be that they convert a bit more of the large patio to indoor space, or put in some kind of drop-downs that let them A/C some of it during the hot months. If the inside tables are taken, I keep moving.

DEFINITELY a must go to place. Everytime I'm there though I always seem to order the same dish because it is AWESOME! try the Sicilian rigatoni with riccotta cheese and pesto. I usually add a chicken breast for protein. AWESOME desserts too!

I'd been going there for years for the gelato when I finally decided to try the dinner. We arrived and had a look at the menu, and then the chef came out and asked if we'd like him to make something special. It was definitely our luck - because he made the most amazing dishes for us - then doted on us for the rest of the meal, making sure everything was to our taste. Even during the summer it was packed on a Saturday night. Always a good sign, even if it does mean you may wait a little. Go hungry. You won't be disappointed.

I've only been here once but I want to come back when I'm in town. My husband and I came in on a Sunday evening, 8:30ish I think, and got some gelato to go. I overheard the owner telling another employee that it was a busy day so it wasn't a surprise that a lot of the flavors were out. I got Oreo after tasting the Nutella. Did not like Nutella because I'm weird and it tasted too much like Nutella (it makes sense in my head, okay?). The gelato tasted more like ice cream but it was still good. More importantly I was digging the vibe here. Staff was super friendly and patient. I'd love to try the food and some of the flavors that were not available. Oh yeah - my husband got the raspberry flavor and really liked it.

I have to make a point of going every time I am in town. I've never had their dinner fare, though I don't expect many have. I have always gone for their gelato, because what else hits the spot after a hot day in the sun? The desserts are definitely worth giving a try, and the coffees are high quality. It's also really neat to hang out with the pseudo-Italian, mafia, gangster types on a thursday night.

First time for anything other than their excellent gelato.Went with a group of 7 and sat outside under a grapevine arbor. Amazing, I did not realize that grapes be grown in Boca Raton. As nice as that is you cannot escape the fact that cars are zooming by about 40 feet away on Federal Highway. Certainly not Sonny's fault but definitely a factor. The vibe is very interesting. Hipsters with their laptops chilling with coffee and gelato, old Italian men playing cards, families, couples and a roaming accordian player accompanied by an older gentleman singing Italian songs. The accordian music really is not for me but I put up with it. Everyone else seemed to enjoy it. I really enjoyed Mama's gnocchi with fresh tomato, mozzerella and basil. Big portion which I managed to eat but was too full to try the Gelato. Friends had panini's, salads and hoagies and there were no complaints. Wine by the glasses very affordable and drinkable. They do not take AmEx Will go back on a night when there is no entertainment. :)

The location is very nice. The chicken panini is fantastic, along with the fantastic variety of gelati, make this place very enjoyable. The outdoor seating is peaceful, and on a very cool and pleasant afternoon, this is definitely the place to be. I am very glad that my frat brother brought me to this place. I will come here again. Best gelato around! Made daily on the premises, so it's as fresh as can be. Friendly service, nice patio area and reasonably priced. If you have a craving for something sweet, Sonny's is the place!

Best Gelato around and the food is great. They also have other Italian desserts for the non-Gelato members of your group. Seating is mostly at an outside patio. Can bring your dog as well.

been there many times-- gelato is fine quality with a large choice- when ever i go in i have to try different flavors-- some have the Wow factor and some do not-- nice cute place with outside eating,, in not such a good corner on federal highway-- busy traffic , views of McDonald ,Publix and Cannoli kitchen next door-BTW Cannoli kitchen has great delivery on a whim- and there ricotta cheesecake is to die for-anyway- - Sonny's should use the back for outside dinning not the front- inside is a Nothing decor with 2 or 3 beat up tables in it- paninis are good and some nice Italian cookies and sfogliatella, but what i DO NOT like is that they have those italian imported frozen defrost and ready BINDI products,, cakes and tortes-- i can stand them-- make your own stuff!!

Small little place with seating outside. Tried about 6 different flavors of gelato. Ordered half amaretto something and half coffee. The flavors lacked the wow factor on the palate. I don't know, it didn't make me say I want to return. They also have some a few assortment cookies and cakes (i.e. tiramisu, cannoli, etc.).

Gelato was fantastic as well as the coffee and tiramisu. Will definitely go back and try the dinner food.

Is it the best gelato I've ever had? No. Will I still go there 4 times a week? Yes. What I love about this place is that the food is fresh, the service is friendly, and the prices and selection are totally inviting. Be prepared to have a serious case of analysis paralysis when it comes to ordering. Between flavors like tiramisu, chocolate brownie, strawberry cheesecake, and creme de caramel, you won't have any idea what you want to order - that's even after trying a free sample of five flavors. Good thing the staff is patient and serves up a generous portion when you are ready to pull the trigger.

Thank goodness for Sonny's! This is an awesome, locally-owned gelato cafe. I make sure to come in whenever I'm in town - definitely the best in the area. The ricotta gelato is just to die for! Every time I go in, I make a secret wish that they will have ricotta. When they don't, a part of me cries inside. But, I just branch out and try their other delicious flavors and have never been disappointed. Their gelato menu changes regularly, and they always have great flavors. In addition to gelato, they serve Italian pastries and desserts, and also have a small lunch/dinner menu. The people that run the place are super friendly, and will put up with your inevitable indecision and taste-testing. I love Sonny's. Hmm, maybe I'll go again tonight..

Great food, good prices and Sonny's Gelato is made fresh by them. They also supply Gelato to other places. There is even a drive thru window if want your Gelato to go. They have really good sandwiches for around $8-$9; big basket of fries is $3. They play Italian music in the background, you can set inside or out, but the inside area is only a couple of tables. Friday and Saturday night there is always a line.

I like the ambiance here-- the outdoor patio with a foliage canopy interlaced with xmas tree lights is a nice touch :). Now if only the view was of the beach instead of the traffic on federal... But I digress. I was here for the gelato. And I didn't get gelato. I got watery ice cream. Granted, it's getting to that time of the year in FL when all my chapsticks (and everything else...) start melting in my car... but I was pretty disappointed when my gelato turned into a sticky puddle within 10 minutes of sitting outside. The texture was all wrong to begin with -- overly sweet and very icy. None of the smoothness and creaminess of conventional gelato... They didn't have ricotta so we got the creme caramel, brownie, and some unmemorable chocolate flavor. The brownie was definitely the best of the bunch but that's not saying much. It didn't help that Publix (with their superior ice cream aisle) was right across the street in my direct line of vision. sigh.

We spent a week in Boca for vacation and were recommended this place by some used to be locals. The food was great and the gelato was amazing! It was just like being in Florence at a cafe. I definitely recommend it!

This is a great place for real fresh Italian food. Every time I go to Boca, I must stop here at least twice. One night for dinner and once for their gelato. The owner is also the chef and makes everything home made. The grandma makes all the dessert with help from her sons. So you can see that this place is a real family ran restaurant. They started small with just gelato and espresso, but now they turned into a full restaurant serving quality Italian food. The staff is very friendly. The only think I can say is that they should have kept it BYOB as their selection in wines are not that good at all. Also, be careful sitting outside as you be eaten alive by the bugs in the middle of the summer. The inside is too small to really eat in there, so if you cant eat outside then you should take the food to go.

There really is a Sonny, a Mrs. Sonny, and a whole host of fine Sonny helpers. The great home-made gelato is as reviewed elsewhere, so I'll highlight Wednesday night when the fisarmonica (accordion to you) player shows up and the paesani dance in the aisles. There's a table under the grape arbor (yep, real grapes, a little thin here in the SoFla terroir, but grapes nonetheless), that has my name on it at around 6, ready for the nightly specials (good, cheap). Look up at the stars and the light-bulbs-on-a-wire and you'll think you're on the corso in your home town. There's always some guy from Napoli with the cigar voice and talkative wife to sit at your table and laugh and sing.

What a great gem in south florida? In the sea of strip centers and national chains, this stands out! you will see local italian chatting, families hanging out, the gelato is awesome...anytime i am in boca i will stop at sonny's for sure.

Still the best gelato I've ever had! I've been going to Sonny's since I was in high school and it's still fantastic. I'm not sure what makes the gelato so good here, but it really is better than any gelato you'll find outside of Italy. They also have a drive thru which makes it really convenient if you just want to pick some up to bring home.

I can't review anything but the cannoli, and they are excellent. They are filled fresh when you order (no soggy shell) - not too sweet and extremely rich and creamy. One day I may get around to trying something else but for now I am sticking with what I know I like.
